In order to reduce water consumption and food waste, dining halls promote Trayless Tuesdays. Additionally, Dining Services only uses trans-fat-free soy oil, antibiotic-reduced pork and chicken, and cage-free shell eggs.

The used fryer oil is collected more than 6, gallons per year and processed into biodiesel. Students took it a step further and joined the Food Recovery Network. Now unused prepared food is donated to a local shelter instead of being composted.

McFadden Alexander Newell serves as the school's first principal. The Carrollton Building, constructed at the corner of Lafayette and Carrollton Avenues houses the State Normal School, including 10 classrooms, meeting rooms, a library and enough space to accommodate students.

Doc Minnegan, father of Towson athletics, is hired as a part-time physical education teacher. He fielded the first soccer team, followed by baseball, gymnastics, track, wrestling, football, and lacrosse teams. Minnegan, who died in , was the first member of the Towson Athletic Hall of Fame.

Towson is the second largest public institution of higher education in Maryland. The Towson Tiger mascot debuts in the fall. Under the leadership of President James L. Fisher, in the college changes its name to Towson State University, further signaling the development and expansion of the institution.
