Several years ago, Towson Energy Activists—along with other student organizations in the University of Maryland system—collected 12, signatures requesting that the university system adopt a carbon neutrality policy.

Chancellor Kirwan concurred, implementing a system-wide sustainability initiative, and shortly thereafter Towson became an ACUPCC signatory, setting a goal of becoming carbon neutral by Those initiatives include a single-stream recycling program that allows any standard recyclable to be thrown into any campus recycling container, a composting program, and participation in the national RecycleMania competition.

Every year the university hosts the Conservation Contest, pitting residence hall against residence hall to see who can achieve the greatest reduction in energy use. Interested students can also participate in the Eco-Rep program, a peer-to-peer environmental education group. Not only does this group educate their peers, they also act as change agents, identify issues, and promote solutions. Students can also participate in a variety of environmentally focused events held throughout the year.

In order to reduce water consumption and food waste, dining halls promote Trayless Tuesdays. Additionally, Dining Services only uses trans-fat-free soy oil, antibiotic-reduced pork and chicken, and cage-free shell eggs.

The used fryer oil is collected more than 6, gallons per year and processed into biodiesel. Students took it a step further and joined the Food Recovery Network. Now unused prepared food is donated to a local shelter instead of being composted.

McFadden Alexander Newell serves as the school's first principal. The Carrollton Building, constructed at the corner of Lafayette and Carrollton Avenues houses the State Normal School, including 10 classrooms, meeting rooms, a library and enough space to accommodate students.

Doc Minnegan, father of Towson athletics, is hired as a part-time physical education teacher. He fielded the first soccer team, followed by baseball, gymnastics, track, wrestling, football, and lacrosse teams. Minnegan, who died in , was the first member of the Towson Athletic Hall of Fame.

Towson is the second largest public institution of higher education in Maryland. The Towson Tiger mascot debuts in the fall. Under the leadership of President James L. Fisher, in the college changes its name to Towson State University, further signaling the development and expansion of the institution. Robert Caret, who spent more than 20 years as a Towson faculty member, dean, executive vice president and provost, assumes the presidency.
