Can i fit in an airplane seat
I recently flew march 10, and there was a guy on the plane who had to purchase a second ticket and he was given two seats. It all depends on the way your body is shaped really. I hope this at least helped a little bit for anyone that is reading this. I've flown reasonably comfortably with an extender at close to lbs and 6'-2". Ask for an extender if she can't get the belt locked, as stated above they won't bat an eye, and there's a good chance they've got one in their apron anticipating her need.
If she's pear shaped, it might be more uncomfortable for her as she may not fit in between the seats very well. I'm broad across the shoulders so that tends to be where I might interfere with other passengers. However, I generally fly with my petite wife, so that's generally not a problem. I try to always sit in aisle seats, and I always look at the seating charts to find where the most room around the seats exists. EG: there's a spot on Boeing planes where the tail starts to taper, and there's about an extra foot or so of shoulder room and there are only two seats instead of three around the first rows of the taper, then it's back down to the normal aisle width where I'll constantly get hit by carts in the shoulder.
If she's right handed, she'll probably want to sit on the right side of the plane looking forward. When you move to the left side, the clasps are on the other side and I find it more difficult to manage the seatbelts.
Don't take this to the bank, but we generally fly United or Delta on long haul flights, other airlines may have different layouts. On a flight from Malaysia to Cambodia on a small carrier, last year I had to get an extender, the belt ends didn't get within 6" of each other and I was about the same weight as I am now.

As I said in another question, I'm bringing my parents to visit me here in Sweden next year. Improve this question. I was once travel companion to a guy who was so big that the standard seat belt wouldn't fit round him, not even at maximum extension. The stewardess brought him an extra extension without batting an eye lid.
It was clearly not her first time. Thank you so much JQR!!! Our family is taking a trip to Mexico in November, and I am trying to lose some weight for me personally. But I have been really worried about flying because I am a big girl, I'm 5'6" and close to lbs. We are supposed to be flying Southwest, which seats are small.
She was very appreciative! Thank you for the info! I have had so much trouble finding a convertible car seat that will rear face on standard airplane Boeing with the proper recline. I have tried 3 different ones including the Costco scenera and they are so upright! Any advice on specific car seats? Or specific rows in the airplane that might have more legroom?
Hi Kristin! Thanks for your comment. Which ones have you tried? My daughter just turned 2 but we have flown 30 times with her and have just given up and forward faced her on the plane shortly after a year.
We do buy the upgraded seats on Alaska for when we fly to Hawaii so she can sleep reclined rear facing. Even at 1 year old, the most important thing is just to keep her safely restraint in case of turbulence which is a much more common issue than plane crashes. If you have more kids in the future, just note that some car seats require a minimum of 2 years old to forward face.
In theory, US airlines have to try to seat you in a place where you can use the car seat safely in the correct direction, but that would be more of an issue when traveling with an infant.
I had a question if you choose to buy a ticket for your infant 8 months but decide to keep her on your lap, and check in the car seat at baggage, is that allowed?
Let me know if you have any other questions! Hi Mindy, great question! Thread the seatbelt through there, buckle and pull tight. Thanks for this amazing guide! Thanks so much for your help! Hi Dan, Thanks for stopping by! Car seat bases are not approved for use on planes. Thanks for stopping by! A backless booster is very easy to carry on — check out the Bubblebum for one that will fit in a backpack you can read my in-depth review here. My favorite option for a 4 year old is the Ride Safer Travel Vest.
The size small will last for several years. You can read more about it here. Dear Melissa, Thanks for the info. It is my first time flying with my first kid, only 5 month old! Your page is so great! But, a question I have?!
Am flying with very small plane, one aisle and totally 4 seats! My wife and I and no ticket for baby. In this Covid world, am not planning to find any empty seat to use. So, what is your suggestion? Still, taking the car seat into cabin? Or using the baby holder on chest like a kangaroo? Or what else to make this nightmare sweeter?!! Hi Kian, Thanks for your comment. US airlines do not permit the use of a carrier during takeoff and landing, as your baby becomes your own airbag in a runway accident.
You can wear your baby during the cruise portion of the flight though you may have to remove her in bad turbulence. Hello Melissa Thank you for your informative post about flying with a car seat. I was reading some other posts but I do have a question for you. So I have the Nuna Pipe Lite car seat.
I recommend that you buy either the Combi Coccoro my favorite! Thank you for your website and all this great information! My question is in regard to checking our carseats and double-stroller. We are traveling with 2 kids under 2. We just wanted to see what your advice was if they are going to indeed make us check our double-stroller Which is definitely over 20lbs. We may ask if they have extra seats, but if not, we are planning on just checking both car seats as well. What do you recommend as far as maybe bags to protect these items while they get thrown around during the process?
American does indeed have a stingy limit for gate checked strollers. Is there any chance you can get away with a single stroller and a baby carrier? I do want to spend a few more minutes ranting about this but, guess not today. Yap, keep reading…. Well, these are those sorts of questions that do not have a specific figure answer.
However, generally, the seats of airplanes are inches wide. Though there are also different seat designs that can contribute to the wideness or narrowness factor.
For instance, if you consider the American Airlines Boeing , it comes with a curvy fuselage. This causes the seat to be slightly narrower than usual ones. The seat follows a certain tray table design that causes it to feel narrow.
So, you can tell that the variations are pretty unpredictable. Also, some airlines have the term passenger of the size that follows up with a rule for purchasing a second seat.
Especially, when the larger passenger cannot occupy one seat. So, you finding the fact that you must buy a second seat on the day of the flight, is not a very pleasant thing to experience. Make sure you take notes on such rules if any by your airlines beforehand and be prepared for it.
I am a size 24 will I fit in an airplane seat and have a comfortable flight afterward? This is just an example of a question that many passengers of plus size tend to have before the flight. Now it typically does not have to be Someone who would have a 46 inches waist and inches of low hip measurement. JetBlue takes a similar approach to Delta Air Lines.
Singapore Airlines has two advantages. On the economy side of things, you are looking at seats with 19 inches of width. For the business class, they range from 28 to 30 inches. Spirit Airlines is known for being relatively cheap, so some may be surprised to see it here.
Regardless of the price, the airline offers 20 inches of width on its seats. They are primarily aimed are plus-sized passengers.
Uzbekistan Airways is often considered one of the best economy airlines for shorter flights. Part of the fleet consists of airplanes with seats that are over 21 inches wide.
The use of seat extenders depends on your size. Before the plane takes off, the cabin crew prepares you for the procedure and explains everything. Among the many things that get presented are the seatbelts, which should be fastened before takeoff. During that procedure, you can see if the seatbelt fits. One thing I have to note is to avoid bringing your own extender.
In , the FAA issued a statement asking passengers not to use extenders they purchased online.
