Why pilate condemn jesus

With Palestine an occupied country, only the Romans can put a person to death. This explains why Jesus has to have two trials. The Sanhedrin has found Jesus guilty of the religious offence of blasphemy.

This would be of no interest to the Romans, so the Jewish leaders have to change the charge against Jesus from claiming to be the Son of God to saying he is the King of the Jews. In doing so they are emphasising the political rather than religious implications of claiming to be the Messiah. He convicted Jesus of treason and declared that Jesus thought himself King of the Jews, and had Jesus crucified.

Pilate died 39 A. The cause of his death remains a mystery. An artifact found in confirmed his existence. In 26 A. While the typical term for a Roman prefect was one to three years, Pilate was to hold his post as the fifth Roman procurator for 10 years. In assuming his position, Pontius Pilate succeeded Valerius Gratus.

His duties as a prefect included such mundane tasks as tax collection and managing construction projects. But, perhaps his most crucial responsibility was that of maintaining law and order.

Pontius Pilate attempted to do so by any means necessary. When Pontius asked Jesus if he was King of the Jews, he claimed that Jesus embraced the title, which he never did.

This accusation was considered an act of treason by the Roman government. According to some sources, Pontius Pilate collaborated with Jewish leaders — who viewed Jesus' claim to power as a political threat—in prosecuting Jesus. All four of the Gospels describe him as weakly succumbing to the Jewish authorities' pressure on him to execute Jesus. Blasphemy was not a crime under Roman law, so the Jewish leaders said that Jesus was guilty of leading a rebellion against the Roman Empire by claiming to the Messiah.

In creating a new political charge, they knew that Pilate would take notice of the case. Pilate could see that the religious leaders felt threatened by Jesus and were looking for a way to get rid of him.

Because of this, Pilate tried to find a solution. He offered the crowd to either release Jesus or Barabbas , a convicted murderer.
